CE.DO – Center for Desert Studies

A country with strong historical, ethnic, linguistic and cultural similarities with Brazil, links that were particularly intense in the formative period of the two nations, between the XVII and XIX centuries, besides Angola is also considered to be one of the main partners of Brazil in the African continent today. In the Namib Desert, south of Angola, region of Kuroco, CE.DO in collaboration with UAN and UFSC, has been developing a pioneering work with the local population of shepherds. The work of CE.DO, which has anthropological, social and environmental focus, will facilitate the actions of the Imagine project in this region, visited by professor André Ramos in 2013. In 2015, the project coordinator was invited to visit the UJES, in the Huambo county, the second largest city in the country. The UJES leaders intend to finance a pilot project in partnership with Imagine, in order to structure teaching laboratories in the institution and train local professors and technicians to carry out scientific activities around Huambo.

The institutional relations of UFSC with the universities in the Magreb region, as well as with all others in the whole Arab were practically inexistent until today. However, we believe that both regions have much to benefit from a scientific, cultural and academic approach. Morocco, a country of ancient culture formed basically by Berbers, Arab and European influences, currently by the rule of King Mohammed VI, who succeeded his father in 1999, goes through a particularly favorable period for scientific and social development represented in the last years by the INDH (Initiative Nationale du Développement Humain). In this context, UFSC has chosen Morocco and UHIIC as pioneering partners in this new phase of its international relations with North Africa. At UHIIC, scientific popularization actions have already been carried out for the benefit of young people from the Moroccan countryside. These actions have yielded Professor Afaf Mikou the 2010 “Purkwa” International Prize, designed by the Nobel Prize in Physics G. Charpak and offered by the French Academy of Sciences, which rewards the scientific literacy of the children on the planet.

UFSC – Santa Catarina Federal University

Guarani Tekoa’Uy’A village
In the Santa Catarina state, there are a number of regions that still lack an adequate formal education structure, either because of their difficult geographical access or because of social, historical and ethnic issues, which induce the marginalization of specific population groups. UFSC already works with some of these groups and now, through the Imagine project, it has established two new successful partnerships. One in the locality of Coxilha Rica, within the county of Lages, where there is a traveling school, and another one in the Guarani village Tekoa’Uy’A, located in the county of Major Gercino.

UAC – Universidad Andina del Cusco

City Administration of Calca

Peru, despite being among South American countries with the biggest economic growth in the 2000s and presenting numerous historical and social similarities with Brazil, is one of the countries of that region with which UFSC still keeps an incipient academic relation. In a country whose social relations have a strong ethnic component, the UAC stands out as a teaching institution strongly identified with the regional development and the Andean ancestral culture. The UAC represented South America in project Imagine by enabling together with the city administration of Calca, the participation of the indigenous communities of Sacllo and Rayampata.
